Hope Endures in the Mountains of Afghanistan

The following story is from one of our Frontline Strategic Partners (FSPs) in Afghanistan. *Initials are used for privacy and security purposes.
This month, our team had the privilege of serving 328 people in some of the most remote corners of Afghanistan. Behind each number is a face, a family, and a story of someone who longs to know they are not forgotten.
Life in Afghanistan is not easy. Every day, the challenges seem to grow. With several international organizations in the health sector closing in recent months, many hospitals and clinics are struggling. Doctors are few, medicines are scarce, and for mothers especially, the risks are great.
In the middle of all this, our teams are pressing on. We go where the needs are greatest, sitting with families, encouraging mothers, and reminding whole communities that they are not alone. It is in these hard places that we see the deepest glimpses of hope—hope that pushes through the snow, the pain, and even the losses.
This month, while meeting with people in a very remote area, I spoke with a man named KM*, a 63-year-old from one of the villages we visit. He shared a story that reflects both the desperate reality and the resilience of Afghan families.
He told us:
“A woman in our village had birth pain. But at the same time, there was a heavy snowfall. When we called an ambulance, they said it was impossible to come to the village. All the villagers decided we should carry her to the clinic, which is two hours away.
When we carried her to the clinic, the midwife said there was nothing they could do. She needed to be transferred to the provincial hospital. So, we transferred her to the provincial hospital. When we got there, the doctors were able to barely save the woman. However, her child did not survive.”
As KM* shared, his face was full of both sorrow and determination. Despite the tragedy, he wanted us to know that the presence of our program in his village was making a difference. He continued:
“Now I’m the only person from my village who has joined this program. I’m learning very phenomenal lessons in my life because I can assist women in their hardship time. I’m really happy that we have this program.”
Stories like this one are not rare in Afghanistan. For mothers in remote areas, childbirth is still one of the most dangerous moments of their lives. With the closure of NGOs and the shortage of doctors and clinics, many women are left without the medical help they desperately need.
Every day, families are forced to make impossible choices—whether to risk traveling through snow and dangerous terrain to reach a clinic, or to stay at home and hope for the best. Too often, the result is heartbreak.
And yet, hope remains. Through KM* and others like him, we see that training, equipping, and encouraging local people have the power to save lives and transform communities. What may seem like a small program in a single village becomes a lifeline when crisis strikes.
Isaiah 40:31 reminds us:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Even in the hardest places, hope shines through acts of love and courage. Through people like KM*, we see how God works in and through ordinary lives to bring help and healing.
